Geelong's animal crisis: 67 dogs rescued, a warning and an opportunity
Introduction
In July 2025, the Geelong Animal Welfare Society raised the alarm after 67 neglected dogs were brought in by an owner in two cars. The animals had suffered trauma, and some died before receiving treatment.
How the situation arose
The dogs, ranging from puppies to seniors, arrived at GAWS in Moolap with serious physical damage: vaccination problems, inbreeding issues, behavioral problems, and wound lesions. The shelter was already overcrowded, but they didn't turn away.
Medical care and rehabilitation
Vets from RSPCA Victoria and Yellow Door Rescue began intensive care: deworming, nutritious diets, wound care, physiotherapy and behavioural training.
Adoptions and long-term solutions
- About 320 dogs gradually recovered, many went to adoption or foster families
- 200 dogs were given temporary shelter through other host families
- GAWS launched fundraising and collaboration with regional rescue teams
Social impact
This case has been described as "the worst neglect ever in the region." Local authorities are considering new legislation and support for owners in crises. GAWS emphasizes that delaying assistance leads to suffering and costs.
What can others learn?
- Seek help early — local shelters or veterinarians offer judgment-free intervention
- Communication is key — anonymous reporting lines exist
- Foster care can help overcrowded shelters
- Preventative castration and education can help control population growth
Long-term cooperation
GAWS now works with foster networks, the RSPCA, and educational programs in community centers to prevent future suffering. Fundraising and awareness campaigns demonstrate that recovery is possible—with community support.
Conclusion
What began as a nightmare for 67 dogs has slowly transformed into hope. Thanks to collaboration, dedication, and foster families, many are returning to a life filled with love. Geelong's response illustrates that even the most harrowing cases can lead to change—if we work together.
